Where Has Mum Gone

Eight years old and trying to understand mum’s undiagnosed mental illness and schizophrenia. Trying to get medical help without consent. Being told we would never get anywhere in life because of ‘Them’. The torment of her world to the vacuum in mine. The family isolation, absence of family friends or relations. Threats of suicide. Threats of gassing us all to danger of death through starvation. She had a life of torment, and my story is of trying to share the fifty or so of her years I knew and how they inevitably impacted on me. Stories about schizophrenia all depend on communication, acceptance and help. They presume some structure to work from. But what if the structure is dismantled with the onset of illness of a parent? Who is looking out for those families, those children? There was no route to follow. This is my story.
